올해 예술계는 '신생공간', '자립' 등의 열쇳말이 큰 화두로 떠오르며 예술 생태계와 작가들의 생존에 대한 관심이 그 어느 때보다 활발했던 한 해를 보냈다. 여기서 주지하다시피, 기존의 예술이 향유되는 구조나 작품 제작을 위한 환경조성에 대한 새로운 인식과 실천은 우리로 하여금 이러한 흐름이 어떤 메시지나 시의성을 가지고 있는지 자문해보지 않을 수 없게 하였다. 신생공간의 출현이나 국가 차원의 문화예술지원사업에 의존하지 않으려는 움직임 속에서 작가들은 저마다의 작은 모임을 가지며 새로운 대안을 모색하고 있다. <Pilot Hole>이라는 전시 타이틀 아래 모인 26명의 작가들 역시 이러한 흐름에 반응하고 응답하는 차원의 이벤트를 펼친다.

<Pilot Hole>은 '벽에 나사나 못을 박기 전 못자리를 표시해두는 것'을 일컫는 말이다. 다소 직관적인 단어에서 유추할 수 있듯이 전시는 작가들이 전시공간에서 그간 시도해보...고 싶었던 작품들을 선보이는 장을 마련한다. 전시가 열리는 복림빌딩은 도곡동에 위치한 상가건물로, 이듬해에 있을 건물 리모델링을 위해 잠시 휴면 중이다. 일찍이 이 곳에 작업장을 꾸려 작업활동을 해오던 두 작가(노경희, 최희승)는 유휴공간으로 변모하는 건물의 모습을 지켜보며 전시공간으로써의 가능성을 엿볼 수 있었고, 주변의 작가들을 초대해 건물의 이곳 저곳을 함께 살펴보며 전시에 대한 구상에 이르게 되었다. 작품이 실제 공간에 놓였을 때 비로소 '어떤 작동'을 일으키는 모습을 작가 스스로 목도하고자 하는 의지는 자명하지만 그러한 기회는 쉽사리 주어지지 않기에 이러한 도심의 유휴공간의 존재는 작가들에게 반갑지 아니할 수 없다.
전시는 또한 '전시'라는 이벤트를 통한 작가들간의 '한시적 연대'에 주목하고 있다. 전시에 참여하는 대다수의 작가들은 어떠한 단체에 소속됨 없이 홀로 작업을 이어가며 전시에 참가하고 여기에 관련된 사람들-작가, 큐레이터 혹은 관객-과 일시적인 공동체를 형성한다. 이러한 전시 형태에서 비롯되는 생리에 착안해 <Pilot Hole>은 최초에 전시를 제안했던 두 사람의 개인적 교분을 이용한 섭외를 시작으로 작가들을 모으고, 전시를 준비하며 이들이 형성하게 될 일시적인 친밀감을 독려하고자 한다.

서두에 언급했다시피, 시대적 흐름에 따라 예술가는 전시를 만들기 위해 다양한 역할을 수행할 수 있게 되었다. 이와 더불어 작가들은 스스로 작품발표의 기회를 만드는 것에서 한 발 더 나아가 그것이 합리적이고 동시에 유의미한 시도가 될 수 있도록 담대한 실험을 주저하지 않는다. 전시는 서울 중심가의 한 유휴건물을 테스트베드(Testbed. 시험대)로 삼고 모인 작가들이 각자의 '파일럿 홀'을 찾는 행위를 통해 예술작품, 나아가서는 예술가 그리고 예술의 존재조건을 설명해줄 수 있는 계기를 마련하고자 한다.

As key words such as “new space” and “self-reliance” emerge as important topics, this year’s art scene saw an elevated interest in the “art ecosystem” and in the survival of artists. New perceptions and practices concerning the structures in which existing art is enjoyed, and forming an environment to produce works compelled us to ask ourselves what messages or timeliness can be found in such trends. Amidst a movement refraining from relying on the emergence of new spaces or state-funded culture and art support projects, many artists have formed small groups as they search for new alternatives. The 26 artists gathered under the exhibition title, Pilot Hole, are also unfolding an event in response to such trends.

A Pilot Hole is a mark one makes before driving a screw or nail into a wall. As one may guess from these rather intuitive words, the exhibition facilitates a field for the artists to present the works they have wanted to try out in exhibition spaces. Bokrim Building, where the exhibition is to be held, is a commercial building located in Dogokdong, Seoul, in a dormant state prior to remodeling scheduled for next year. Artists Noh Kyounghee and Choi Heeseung, who had been working in a studio at this building, saw the building’s transformation into an idle space, and its possibility as an exhibition space. They invited fellow artists to examine various places within the building to finally plan an exhibition there. While the will of the artist to see for him/herself “what kind of reaction” a work makes when it is placed in the actual space for exhibit, such opportunities are not easily acquired, and therefore, the presence of an idle space in downtown Seoul was very much welcomed by the artists.

The exhibition also focuses on the “temporary solidarity” among artists through the event called an exhibition. The majority of the participating artists mainly work alone without belonging to any group, but will form a temporary community with the people related to the exhibition, such as other artists, curators and spectators. Noting the physiology of such form of exhibition, Pilot Hole began to gather artists through the personal connections of the two artists who first proposed the exhibition, and hopes to encourage the temporary intimacy the people concerned will form while preparing for the show.

As I mentioned in the beginning, according to the flow of the times, artists are now able to play diverse roles in order to create exhibitions. Moreover, artists not only make opportunities to show their works, but do not hesitate to carry out bold experimentation to make their attempts rational and meaningful. By using an idle building in downtown Seoul as a test bed, the artists taking part in the exhibition intend to take this as an opportunity to provide explanations for the art works, the artist, and the conditions for art to exist, through their acts of finding their own “Pilot Holes.”
